Overview of the Foundation/Boilerplate
To accelerate breakthroughs, the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation provides today's best young scientists with funding to pursue innovative cancer research. The Foundation offers an alternative to programs supported by the NIH and large organizations, which typically favor senior scientists with established track records.
Since its founding in 1946, the Foundation has invested over $220 million and funded more than 3,200 early career scientists. Eleven scientists supported by the Foundation have received the Nobel Prize, and others are heads of cancer centers and leaders of renowned research programs. The Foundation currently is funding more than 110 scientists at leading medical centers and research institutions. In 2008, it invested approximately $9 million in brilliant ideas from early career researchers.
The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation has gained worldwide prominence in cancer research by identifying outstanding early career scientists and physician-scientists. Each of its award programs is extremely competitive, with less than 10% of applications funded.
100% of all direct donations are used to support scientific research. We pay our low administrative and fundraising costs from our Damon Runyon Broadway Tickets service and our endowment.
